In this post titled:

Criticism We Recieve When Starting A New Venture

I want to reach out to all you Entrepreneurs striving to achieve your dreams.

To all of you that know that working 40 hours a week for 40 years is not all that there is to life.

When we start a new venture, we obviously share the news with those closest to us, parents, siblings, relatives, friends, co-workers, etc.

And because they don’t understand, or share the same vision, they try to tell us not to waste our time or that it will never work… and they tell us to “get a real job”.

They are essentially trying to steal your dream…

… But they are not stealing your dream because they are bad people, but more out of ignorance. They are trying to protect you because they just don’t know.

Remember Jesus as He was being tortured and crucified, and He says a little prayer to God that was something like this: “Forgive them for they know not what they do”.

Now if Jesus can forgive those that are crucifying Him, I think we can forgive those that are telling us to “get a real job”.

But, and this is a BIG BUT… don’t discuss your business with folks that don’t have the same vision. They will continue to bring you down.

So when you get together for the holidays, or get togethers. don’t talk business.

Remember the age old advice: “Never discuss politics and religion” so just add in “or your home based business”.

I remember my first venture that I started. I was in my late 20’s, had 1 kid toddler age, a mortgage and a job.

And when I told  my dad (rest in peace dad, I love you) of my new home business I was starting , he said to me, “what do you have to do that thing for? Don’t you make enough money on your job?”.

And a few months later when I showed my dad a check for several thousand dollars, my dad got this huge proud smile on his face. That was enough for me to know I did the right thing and that he was proud of me. But I remember like it was yesterday, he looks at me with that smile and  said to me “I’m glad you didn’t listen to me”.

Because vague work at home business, residual income, time compounding… my dad, an old school Italian, just did not understand it.

But my dad did understand checks for several thousand dollars. That made sense to him. He was proud that I stood on my own 2 feet,  made the decision I did, then put the work behind it and made it work.

But sometimes, that opposition comes from a spouse. Then what?

I’ve had many folks come up to me and say “my wife won’t support me” or “my husband won’t support me” … “he/she won’t get involved”,  etc.”

My first question is, do you take your spouse to work with you everyday? Does your spouse help you on your job? And the answer is always “no, they got their own job.”

So I ask them, why do you need your spouse on board for this?

Let’s take a lesson from the movie Jerry Maguire with Tom Cruise and Cuba Gooding, Jr. where they started screaming “Show me the money”.

So if you don’t have a spouse that is supporting you in your business, get to work and show them the money, and watch how fast they then support you.

When I got my first check of several thousand dollars, I can’t lie to you… I gloated… I even mailed copies of it to friends of mine that gave me a hard time in the beginning.

They were trying to steal my dream not out of ignorance, but out of malice. My friends being malicious to me, I felt  I had every right to gloat, and it felt good.

Like they say… “Success is Revenge”.

So if I can share some advice when starting out your new venture:

1- don’t try to share with people that don’t understand and have no desire to understand it

2- don’t share it with people that maliciously tear you don’t for trying something new.

3- get into profit as soon a possible… not just so that you can gloat (but you may want to) but so that you can achieve your goals and dreams and live the lifestyle you desire.

Some one liners to help you get through the tough times and get the job done:

If it’s gonna be, it’s up to me.

Pray like it’s up to God, Work like it’s up to you.

You only failed if you quit.
