Welcome to the second in my series of: Finding a job in today’s tough economy – How to market yourself in any economy. My goal is that by the completion of these short articles, you will become the hunted in the job market as opposed to always having to hunt down a job. This is not rocket science (although if you are looking for a job as a Rocket Scientist, these articles may help).

If you’re over 40 years old, you may have lost the ability in knowing how to market yourself in today’s online age. While old techniques still have some merits, such as beating the pavements while wearing your suit and carrying copies of your resume, checking with friends, calling specific companies in your area… although these techniques somewhat work, they are as slow as the rotary telephone.

As time went on into the late 1980’s and early into the mid 1990’s, I had a sure fire method of getting your phone to ring off the hook with job opportunities. Over the years, up to including today I have modified these techniques to continue to get your phone to ring off the hook with job opportunities.

Let’s talk about my original method. In the late 1970’s and early 1980’s a technique I had was too get the Sunday newspapers, in my case the Sunday New York Times, the Sunday New York Daily News, and even the Sunday USA Today. I would basically look in the Help Wanted section and make my phone calls. For the headhunters that listed their numbers, I would call that Sunday and leave a voice message and would wait for the phone calls to come in that following week. This was quicker than calling during business hours as you have to go through the gatekeeper (the secretary).

Then as time went on… If you remember WinFax software (or the like) it had the ability to queue up a bunch of fax phone numbers and fax a specific document… in this case… my resume.

I had all the job agency phone numbers from the papers added to the outbound fax queue before going to sleep for the night. I would start up the Winfax software and it would fax my resume to no less than 40 angencies. And starting Monday morning, my phone would ring off the hook. All that this method does is to guarantee you job interviews. But to actually get the job I needed to be qualified. Please see my 1st article in my series about making yourself marketable in order to get the job.

And as you probably guessed by now, I still can get these Sunday papers. But, instead of faxing or calling the agencies, you send your resume via email.

But!… And this is a BIG BUT ( not to be confused with Sir Mix-A-Lot and his song of similar title). There is the best practice method that I teach right now.

This will be taught in my next article. The 3rd in the series of finding a job in any economy.
